Casey Kelleher – The Perfect Guest

Thanks to Bookouture Books for my gifted ebook in order to write my honest review for the tour today.

‘I’m home,’ she says, standing at my door with a sky-blue backpack clutched tightly to her chest. I haven’t seen my granddaughter in years. But I know she’s hiding a deadly secret…

It’s been ten years since I last saw Stephanie, but looking into her haunted eyes, she looks just as innocent as she did as a baby. I remember the photo of her wrapped in a little pink blanket; how my heart hurt not to hold her on the day she was born. Pulling her in to a tight embrace, I promise her that although she’s lost her mother, I will take care of her from now on. No matter what…

But as I usher her inside, I can’t help wondering if Stephanie knows my secrets. The real reason I hadn’t seen her mother in years… or why she wasn’t ever allowed to visit me at my house.

Did my daughter take our family secrets to the grave? Stephanie’s heart breaks when she talks about her mother. But soon details slip out about the night she died, and I begin to realise that my granddaughter is just as good a liar as I am…

Stephanie says my daughter’s death was an accident, but I’m not so sure. If I uncover my granddaughter’s secrets, will I be next?

This utterly addictive psychological thriller will have you reading late into the night. Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, John Marrs and Claire McGowan.

Casey Kelleher is an author who I have followed since I was introduced to her writing. Whatever she publishes is a must-read for me, every time. The Perfect Guest is her latest publication, and I couldn’t wait to start reading when the book landed on my Kindle.

Kay’s estranged daughter has passed away. Her granddaughter, Stephanie, moves in with her. Kay thinks it will be lively to get to know Stephanie, as they have had no contact previously. There is a couple, Ash and Rosie, who live close to Kay’s home, in a tent, with their baby son. One stormy night, Kay invites them to stay at hers for a few days. It soon becomes pretty clear that there are secrets, and no one wants theirs to come to light

This author can do no wrong to me, not yet anyway! She first wrote gangland and has now moved into the psychological thriller genre. The Perfect Guest is another one that ticks all my boxes. Told from multiple perspectives, which creates a suspenseful read. I was hooked immediately.

Every character is multi layered and complex and felt so well developed as the story unfolded. Casey is so great at misdirection and making me suspect everyone. The twists in the story just build the drama in my head as I read. Thinking one thing then finding out it’s not that!

Not everyone is likeable, and sometimes I feel like shouting at a few. This is part of what makes this such a good psychological thriller! Yet another brilliant book to add to the rest.
