Angela Kecojevic – Scareground

I’m so pleased to be able to bring you my review for Scareground by Angela Kecojevic. Thanks to Dave and the team at The Write Reads for allowing me to tag along on the tour and to Neem Press from my gifted copy of the book.

Roll up, roll up, the Scareground is in town!

Twelve-year-old Nancy Crumpet lives above a bakery and her life is a delightful mix of flour, salt, and love.

Yet her mind is brimming with questions no one can answer: Why did her birth parents disappear? Why can she speak with the sky? And why must she keep her mysterious birthmark hidden?

Everything changes when the Scareground returns to Greenwich. When Nancy and her best friend meet the fair’s spooky owner, Skelter, and discover a world full of dark magic and mystery, she must confront her greatest fears to get to the truth.

But is Nancy ready for all the secrets the Scareground will reveal?

A middle grade creepy fantasy story by an author I haven’t heard of before. The cover alone drew me into wanting to read this book. The blurb just drove the fact home that I HAD to read it! October is bearing down on us, and this is the perfect read for this time of year.

Scareground isn’t just a creepy story. It’s an immersive experience. The world building is superbly done. I didn’t feel once that I was reading about Nancy, I felt like I was actually with her. Experiencing exactly what she does as she goes on a journey that will culminate in discovering about her past and what’s to come.

The Scareground has its own ways of doing things, and you really feel like you are in it. I couldn’t put this book down. I didn’t want to leave this world. The characters are well rounded enough for me to be able to envision them as I read. I was never jarred out of the Scareground and back into real life. The writing flows so well, and the pacing is just right.

This is not just a book for YA. it’s one which adults can really be gripped with. I know i was captivated by this tale. I read it in one go, I didn’t go to sleep until I knew everything! I couldn’t, and then I wished I hadn’t finished it. To me, that’s the sign of a great book.
