‘Love Me Tender’ by Lorraine Mace is a thriller that is the fifth book in the DCI Paolo Sterling series. A book that I found so easy to get into right away.

Newly promoted DCI Sterling responds to a tip-off and arrives at an apartment block to find the dismembered body of a young woman. And with no indication of a break-in, all signs suggest the killer was known to her. Then the victim’s friend is snatched with no witnesses and the unanswered questions mount up. At the same time, Sterling’s team are leading the surveillance of a local club, thought to be involved in a drug operation. But when one of his colleagues ends up in hospital close to death, Paolo begins to lose his grip.

With the odds stacked against him, and time running out, can DCI Sterling uncover the truth before it’s too late? Or will this case finally tip him over the edge?

A story that shows us both sides of DCI Sterling’s life, professional and personal. I always enjoy getting to know both sides of a persons life. It gives me a more in-depth view of them. I quite warmed to Sterling and enjoyed the panoramic view the author created.

Then there is the Boy, that is all we learn, no name – just the Boy. We see he has committed some of the crimes and we find out about how he was brought up and what has made him turn to crime. Lorraine Mace skillfully weaves a story that gives us clues but it doesn’t stand out until closer to the conclusion of the story.

I have to say this book is easily read without the previous books being read first as the author puts enough information into this one for the reader to keep up. I would say, if you are just dipping in with this book…you will want to go back and read the rest anyway!

A dark and gritty story with such a tightly plotted storyline that it hooks you in from the first page. The tension is almost palpable and the story begins as it means to go on, it doesn’t let up in the twists, turns and drama running throughout. I was so immersed in this book I lost track of time and felt like I was actually with Sterling, that is the quality of Lorraine Mace’s writing.
