Jacob Moore – FLY #FLY #JacobMoore @CameronPMTweets @RandomTTours #RandomThingsTours #SharonBTB

Today I have FLY by Jacob Moore on the blog. I must apologise again as I should have closed the tour on the 20th May and have just managed to get my review up now. Thank you to Random Things Tours and the author for my copy of the book to take part.

Will, is a normal 12 year old boy. He dislikes school, doesn’t get good grades, thinks about girls, and dreams of escaping his ordinary life by flying away. He is totally unremarkable until he discovers he has special powers which he cannot control and does not yet understand.

With the guidance of his principal, who recognizes his gift, he joins three other ‘special’ classmates on a magical journey to a fantasy world. This strange, unique place is extraordinary in every way. Reality and time are fluid and can change at any moment, space can be warped and manipulated in the blink of an eye, and the four young adults begin to learn how to control their powers for good. When they are confronted with an evil more powerful than they can imagine, three of the classmates are sucked in and cannot escape, and Will and his powers alone can save them.

In order to do so, he must first learn to control his powers as he grows from a child into an adult. Until he can harness his unique abilities in this magical world, he cannot properly function in any reality and the evil only grows stronger. The fate of his three classmates depends on whether he can let go of his childhood in time.

The first book in a series from debut author Jacob Moore, FLY is a coming of age fantasy built on real life values and experiences. It is appropriate for teens 12 and up, and also designed to be appealing for adults and parents. The adventures of Will and his friends are a thrilling, fun, and educational way to encourage kids to read, or for adults to enjoy a good story.

FLY successfully manages to transcend age as it develops the concepts of self-belief and self-control, mindfulness, and the hardships of growing up.

I fell in love with fantasy and Young Adult books a few years ago and FLY sounded like a book that would tick all the boxes for me. It did, I was entranced with Will, the 13 year old who is our main character.

The story is narrated by Will and we follow his journey after he finds out he has special powers. What a journey this young boy goes on. He traverses alternating realities, time travel and more. On the way he faces good and evil as well. This is a magical tale of a boy moving from his childhood into adult hood. Along the way he learns the ways to control his powers as an adult. This is a clever blended tale of a young boy coming of age wrapped in a fantasy story.

Jacob Moore has written a story that is a great book to get any pre-teens out there to read. It’s not all serious and has humour woven throughout, while also highlighting the use of mindfulness, how to be self aware and to control your emotional self. I enjoyed how he slotted these subjects into the storyline. They were skilfully introduced, as Will and his friends began to experience a strange world that they couldn’t understand.

I particularly found Jacob Moore’s use of imagery to make the reader reflect on important things in life, a great way to get the message across. This isn’t just a thought provoking story, it’s also an interesting read. The characters can be clearly seen developing as the story develops and that helped me to emotionally connect with them.

FLY is an intriguing, beautiful book that is as great a read for twelve year old as well as adults too. I am sure we can all learn something from this insightful story of a boy and his special gifts. I looking forward to the next book that’s for sure.

I will always be from my original home in Connecticut, but I also have lived in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. I am a certified English teacher (in three states!) and currently reside in Stoughton, Massachusetts with Marie and our two cats, Marian and Jesu. I am always happy when it snows and, just like Will from my novel, I’ve always wanted to fly.
