Rachel Amphlett – A Lethal Deception

Today, I am on the Random Things Tours blog tour for Rachel Amphlett’s A Lethal Deception. Thanks to Anne Cater and Saxon Publishing for my copy of the book for today.

When a brutal attack on a business owner is followed by a suspicious death, the police first suspect the beginning of a new underworld drugs war.

Then a second victim is found dead, and the truth starts to look like something much worse.

With the death toll rising and her career under scrutiny from the media and her own superiors, Kay Hunter is running out of time to unravel the deadly secrets hiding behind ruthless ambition and treachery.

But Kay isn’t going to give up easily.

Because this time, the first victim is closer to home…

The eleventh book in the long-running Detective Kay Hunter series shows no signs of being boring or dull. Rachel Amphlett can weave a story that has you transfixed from the beginning right until the last page is finished. I have read a fair few of her books, and this one is just as authentic and entertaining as her first.

This is a series that allows you to really know the characters, and as the books go by, you realise there is a little bit of your heart reserved for it. The police investigations that are disturbingly true to life and characters that have been created so well that you can’t help really feeling everything that they feel.

In A Lethal Deception, we see Kay having to be sidelined in a case that hits a little too close to home. A story that centres around recreational drugs and a pharmacuetical company that brings the reality of today’s society to the fore. The devastation that drugs cause is laid bare as we witness Adam and his colleagues dealing with the fallout. Rachel Amphlett has also very realistically portrayed how the misuse of drugs affect the family and friends of those who fall foul of them. The emotions really pack a punch to the reader.

The investigations may be dark, tense, and emotional, but as is usually found in a Kay Hunter thriller, we do have some light and humerous moments. These do lighten the tone of the story and provide us with a few giggles, too. I always love the banter in the team and just show that this is a team that works too.

In conclusion, A Lethal Deception is a dramatic, fast-paced thriller that kept me engrossed constantly. I have missed Detective Kay Hunter and the team.

Author Bio

Rachel Amphlett

Before turning to writing, USA Today bestselling crime author Rachel Amphlett played guitar in bands, worked as a TV and film extra, dabbled in radio as a presenter and freelance producer for the BBC, and worked in publishing as an editorial assistant. She now wields a pen instead of a plectrum and writes crime fiction and spy novels, because that’s what she grew up reading.

Her debut thriller, WHITE GOLD was released in July 2011 and features British secret agent Dan Taylor. The series established Rachel as an author to watch and spurned three more novels before Rachel turned her attention to a new character, Detective Kay Hunter. The Kay Hunter crime thrillers are based in Kent and feature a tight-knit team of detectives. Praised by experts for their attention to detail, the books are also much loved by readers for their page-turning plots and devious twists with comparisons to TV shows NCIS and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 2020, Rachel created a new crime thriller series based around the central character Mark Turpin, an Oxfordshire-based detective. The first book, NONE THE WISER, received critical acclaim from Adrian McKinty (The Chain) and Jo Spain (With Our Blessing, The Confession), with the follow-up book, Her Final Hour being praised by the creator of the DCI Banks series, Peter Robinson.

In addition to her detective stories, Rachel also writes the Eva Delacourt thriller series featuring a female contract killer, as well as standalone crime fiction, psychological thrillers and more. A keen traveller, Rachel has both Australian and British citizenship. You can find out more about Rachel and her online shop at http://www.rachelamphlett.com.
