Griff Hosker – Targets Of Treachery

‘Targets Of Treachery’ by Griff Hosker is the fourth book in the Lord Edward’s Archer series. This is a book that I found can easily be read as a stand alone. Set in Medieval England it is bursting with nuggets of historical facts while being a fabulous and immersive read. Let’s have a look at what it’s about:

SYNOPSIS

Captain Gerald has proven himself an unrivalled archer, but now he is married, he longs to enjoy life’s simpler pursuits, raising a family and tending his land.

But life on the borderlands brings complications, and King Edward has different ideas for Gerald. Prince Llywelyn of Wales will not toe the line, and once more, Gerald is chosen as royal envoy. He must cross the treacherous Welsh Marches to make strategic allegiances and request Llywelyn bend the knee to the English crown.

When those allegiances fail to protect England from Welsh rebellion, King Edward abandons diplomacy and seizes Welsh land to erect and capture castles, imbuing the landscape with intimidation.

As Gerald assists in this military tug-of-war, his thoughts are back home with his family, where personal vendettas threaten his own fortifications. Can he help wrest power back into English hands before the Welsh mob descends on all he holds dear

MY THOUGHTS

Gerald Warbow is the main character, his allegiance is to his King, Edward. The king decides that Gerald is the one who should be able to press upon Prince Llywelyn of Wales that he should bend for the English crown. We see him travel only for everything to still end in battle. A battle the King wants Gerald to be a part of, even if Gerald wishes to be home. I have such an interest in history and this book fulfilled that for me. It felt like the author had brought history into glorious technicolour life through his characters. Gerald is a loyal servant to his King and we see that in everything he does, putting his own needs to the side while he faces danger for his King.

This is a book that some may think would be boring, oh no, it’s far from that. I was swept away back into the times of Archers, Kings and battles for land or honour. A story that captured my imagination and stole the time away from me. I reluctantly put my book down to do the boring day to day things that always get in my way. I enjoyed it so much I now wish to read the previous books as well.

If you, like me, love an exciting historical yarn with action throughout, give ‘Targets Of Treachery’ a try. It won’t disappoint!

Thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for my place on this tour, Lume Books and Griff Hosker for my gifted copy of the book.
