Ann Bloxwich – What Goes Around

‘What Goes Around’ by Ann Bloxwich is her debut novel and the beginning of a series featuring D.I Alex Peachey. I was wanting to read this as soon as I saw the cover and synopsis. Definitely a cracker of a book!

Centred on the adult entertainment industry this is a dark and pretty hard-hitting thriller blended with a police procedural. Three women decide to go and watch a male strip show. One of the women, Becky, says she is dating one of the strippers, Ray Diamond, who has a bad reputation and an attitude that more than matches his reputation. When Becky goes missing he is on the police radar. DI Alex Peachy and his team are investigating. But Alex is dealing with a massive issue at home. His son Joel who is disabled is becoming both physically and verbally abusive, he is getting out of control. Can Alex handle his personal issues while finding a murderer too?

A fast-paced story that brings us an array of characters, some pretty unlikeable ones and also some truly lovely ones. I was so with Alex and his family, I understood their issues so well. They want to do their best for their son but all the while realising he was becoming uncontrollable and they definitely need help from somewhere. My heart went out to them.

This is a well-written story with many a red herring to lead you the wrong way as well as the twists and turns expected in this type of book. It kept me guessing which in turn made me more eager to get to the bottom of it all, meaning I managed to read the full book over two days. A highly enjoyable and very entertaining read, with subjects that nobody likes to talk about brought to the fore! An author to watch out for.
