‘Nearest Thing To Crazy’ by Elizabeth Forbes is a psychological thriller that is so well written and is a disturbing and very powerful read.

Ellie Black, a glamourous writer moves into a rural and very close-knit community. The community easily accepts her as one of their own. Ellie is soon involved with fundraising activities and local events. Out of everyone, there is one woman who doesn’t like Ellie. Cassie is married to Dan and dislikes her immediately, but as time goes on Cassie feels that her place in the Village and even her life is slowly and insidiously being eroded and undermined. Is this real or is it all in her head? Even her husband thinks she is losing it…and even voices his opinion.

Told by Cassie and Ellie we are led down Cassie’s path of increasing paranoia and confusion. We see the toll it takes on her relationships with everyone. Dan, her daughter and even the residents of the village start to gossip when she misses meetings as she says she didn’t know about them or is late for things. I really, really felt for Cassie I just wanted to sweep her up and keep her safe. As I said Ellie also tells her story too and this culminates in a who do you believe kind of situation.

A deliciously dark and twisty tale that will have you wondering is Cassie going slowly crazy or is Ellie manipulating a situation to her advantage? Even as you feel for Cassie, there was always doubt in the back of my mind. I must say I never saw that ending coming, at all!

Elizabeth Forbes has written about the darker side of human nature and in doing so has created a tense and gripping story that I totally couldn’t put down! I have not had the pleasure of reading any books by Elizabeth Forbes but this one and I plan to amend that error and add her books to my towering TBR pile!

A dark, tense, deliciously twisting and overall very gripping story, I highly recommend ‘Nearest Thing To Crazy’. Add it to your pile it is so worth anyone’s time reading it.
