Mary Wood – Secrets Of The Jam Factory Girls

‘Secrets of the Jam Factory Girls’ by Mary Wood is a historical saga and it follows on from ‘The Jam Factory Girls’. These books are set in the Pre-war years in Bermondsey, London. I unfortunately haven’t read the first book so ‘Secrets of the Jam Factory Girls’ is the only book I have read. I personally found it pretty easy to follow, luckily. As I always say try to read both books in order as you get more understanding of the characters and dynamics.

Mary Wood

We join Elsie, Millie and Dot in Swifts Jam Factory in 1912. Elsie has been promoted, she is in charge of the factory floor workers now. The three girls are growing closer and we see the factory is in the up and Millie is getting excited for her wedding to Len. As good as everything seems to be going, there is always someone who you get lurking around and plotting. This is the case here as well. Someone close to the girls is planning to cause massive trouble… can the girls realise and thwart the plan?

Another Mary Wood saga that showcases the time the books are set in. Her research is second to none. The way of life, how people saw and thought about things was so much different than now. She brings characters you want as your best friend or sister, they are so lifelike and real. I wanted to hug these girls and make them feel better. I could picture and almost smell the factory!

Heartbreaking story in parts and I loved every word. I shall be picking up the first book when I can…I loved Mary’s work so much.

Thank you to Random Things Tours and Pan Macmillan for my copy of the book
