Russ Thomas – Nighthawking

‘Nighthawking’ by Russ Thomas is the second book in the D.S Adam Tyler and D.S. Mina Rabbini series. Set in Sheffield they work in the Cold Case Review Unit. The first book being ‘Firewatching’ a hugely popular and excellent book that I put in my top 10 of 2020 books. I found ‘Nighthawking’ to be a fabulous read with another mystery that is not all it seems.

Russ Thomas

We see Adam sidetracked after the death of his father that has been put as suicide. He doesn’t believe this so is spending more time on his own to investigate he is also struggling with his relationship too. Meanwhile, Mina is spending her time covering for his frequent absences.

The Botanical Gardens in Sheffield, a beautiful place to be…usually until an unsuspecting nighthawker who has just paid the Gardens a visit during the night with his metal detector finds more than he bargains for. Adam and Mina are on the case straight away. The woman’s body has been there months buried in a rather quiet corner, normally it would have been years before it was discovered but, in this case, someone has crept into the gardens and unfortunately for someone dug her up.

With Adam being ever-increasingly absent and the murder enquiries piling up Mina begins to flounder and the complications are just beginning! Adam finds himself deep into the secretive nighthawkers world. Treasure hunters may just be willing to do anything to keep their finds.

A twisty and intense story that grabbed me immediately. I loved how as the story unfolds and the pieces start connecting as if it was a jigsaw, the whole picture clears whereas at the beginning it all seems too much for these two officers. I am enjoying watching the characters develop as we go into personal lives and their professional ones too.

Russ Thomas has managed to keep his winning formula of fantastic characters, a plot that is so skilful with a conclusion that had me shocked. I am really ready for book three like now!

Thank you to Random Things Tours and Simon & Schuster UK for my gorgeous copy of this fabulous book.
