‘One By One’ by Helen Bridgett is her debut crime novel. One that is a mystery that hooks you from the start.

Maxie Reddick is a criminology professor at the local university and finds out that a young woman has been the victim of a serious sexual assault. She realises the police will struggle to find the perpetrator so starts by getting at least some information from the traumatised girl so she can begin her own investigation.
With her Criminology role, she takes every tiny bit of detail on board and this really plays a large part in helping her on her mission to discover the attacker. We see Maxie following her personal investigation even as her case starts to become darker and it seems she could be chancing her family’s safety.
The story even gives us the attackers viewpoint. This shows us the state of their mind so we have a wider picture of the whole attack and how the attacker justifies the things they have done.

I found Maxie a very intriguing character with her own issues but she is a woman who is determined to find the answer, no matter what the cost to her. A story that never lets up right from page one. The twists and mystery don’t stop until you are sat on the edge of your seat. I now have another author to keep my eye on!
