R.J. Mitchell – The Hurting

‘The Hurting’ by R.J. Mitchell is the second book in the D.S Thoroughgood series. Last week I reviewed ‘Parallel Lines’ and you can read my review of that on the blog.

R.J. Mitchell

A thriller that picks up where the first book ends. We see DS Thoroughgood recovering from the injuries that he sustained previously while at the same time thinking that without the love of his life, he doesn’t see a point in carrying on. He even mulls over quitting his career. His only issue is, once a copper, always a copper. On his return from his convalescence in Perthshire with Hardie they encounter some well-known faces and, hey presto! Thoroughgood is back! What begins as a car chase rapidly snowballs into something so big it is on an international level. A terror plot is discovered and the two policeman soon find it turns personal too.

This story is a worthy follow up to ‘Parallel Lines’. There is nothing better than being able to return to the world you have just left from the last book. ‘The Hurting’ is a very definite rollercoaster of a read. The action is very real, as is the danger, it is the same seedy Glasgow but this time the enemy is different as well and DS Thoroughgood is a different one to the we left in ‘Parallel Lines’.
Again the scenes are that vivid they make you wince at times with the violence but, I like a story to make me actually feel. The characters are developing well as we go into the second book too.

I have found my new obsession! I love the pace of these books they sweep me up and I am carried away into this world of coppers, criminals and all the violence that is part and parcel of this world. I still say that the 12 years experience the author has from the Glasgow Police force shines through. Again I thought that it aided in the authenticity of the story.

An adrenaline-inducing story that had my heart in my mouth at certain points throughout.

Thanks to @damppebbles, @spitfiremedia and @MJPGroup for the book to write my review today.
