Josie Channer – The Diary Of A Prison Officer

‘The Diary Of A Prison Officer’ by Josie Channer is an educational read as well as entertaining.

Set in 2003 this diary belongs to Amber Campbell, a young woman who has started work within the walls of HMP Holloway. The diary also time slips to the present day so, we don’t just experience her employment, we also see her on her journey through Africa, which I found very interesting as well.

In this book Josie highlights a lot of subjects that are pretty high on the agenda these days, the worst being the discrimination embedded within the justice system. Most of us are aware of the discrimination towards prisoners, but what is not as highlighted is the way the P.Os themselves are treated. I was glad to read something that brings the issue forward! I think everyone should know about this disgusting behaviour. I do have an idea anyway as I have a very old friend who works in HMP Manchester, so I know it isn’t a bed of roses.

This book is written from experience and I could tell. I applaud Josie’s bravery for actually writing this story with a passion that is crystal clear, particularly in reference to the racism and race issues.

A thoroughly thought-provoking book, and one I am extremely glad I came on the blog tour. Another book that I have read this year that I feel everyone should read at least once.
