‘Starchild: A Memoir Of Adoption, Race And Family’ by Michaela Foster Marsh is a book that is an absolutely incredible story. A true one at that. It is Michaela’s account of her adopted brother and her own life.

Frankie was her ‘twin’ brother, they were born just weeks apart and her family adopted him as a child. Growing up in Glasgow is not that easy anyway, but when you are twins of a different race, it doesn’t get any harder.
This very emotional depiction, for me, hits hard and brings home the issue of acceptance that Frankie had, although his family doted on him and loved him as they should, the world outside was never easy. This straight from the heart account, had me laughing one minute and crying the next. Frankie passed away as a young man which was devastating for Michaela, so she decided to start looking for Frankie’s biological family and it culminated in her travelling to Uganda and discovering her family there and a connection she could never have imagined.
This is such a frank story that raises all the issues Frankie and Michaela’s family faced and it touched me in such a way that I found was inspirational, that we can all overcome if we care enough. A siblings bond can transcend anything if we want it too. Such a beautiful piece of writing, I am so happy I got to discover this touching book.
