Hidden In The Shadows by Imogen Matthews is the captivating sequel to The Hidden Village. It is a historical fiction novel set in The Netherlands in World War 2. I was very interested and excited to read this book as I have Dutch family and have heard tales of the winter hunger years where my in-laws family resorted to eating tulip bulbs!

This story is about a village that was a safe place from the Nazi occupation for a time. This book picks up as they start to advance upon the village clearing the areas of any Jews around. Wouter and Laura both need to get to safety.Wouter panics and flees, leaving Laura to find her own way, moving from safe house to safe house. The sense of danger and of not knowing who to trust at any time, then the horror of possibly being captured by the Nazis brings a taut story, one with tension running through every page!
The couple doubt they will ever meet again on their journeys.Wouter, with help from others and faced with danger from the Nazis always on the forefront does locate her, but can he actually get to her?

I felt so much sympathy for Laura throughout how sad that people had to do these things to survive the war. Imogen Matthews has created an emotional, harrowing tale one based upon fact but woven into fiction that has been able show people just how horrific Holland during the war years probably was for some and that we should never forget.
