Rob Sinclair – Dead Reckoning

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for my gifted ebook to write my honest review for the tour today.

The most dangerous people are those with nothing to lose. Who don’t care if they live or die.
Simon Peake does care… he just isn’t sure about what right now. The ex-soldier’s life is as close to rock bottom as it gets.

He needs a job and he needs a quiet life.

What he gets is a whole load of mess working for New York-based Irish mobster Harry Lafferty. A job that requires him to use his special skills on some very unsavory people. His relationship with Harry’s niece isn’t exactly conducive to a quiet existence either…

As Peake tries to walk the fine line between surviving in this new life, and atoning for his old one, he struggles on both counts. And when his past comes back to bite him, and those closest to him are threatened, the reckoning will be merciless for anyone who stands in his way.

I do enjoy a good action thriller, and Rob Sinclair writes the best! Dead Reckoning is the first book of the new Simon Peake Thriller series. I must be honest I didn’t even check what it was about! I just wanted to read it.

As always with this author, it’s a fast-paced thriller. We follow Simon Peake,an ex-squaddie, who needs a job. The job he finds isn’t one that fulfils his need for a quiet life. He works for a New York based mobster, and it’s a job that requires his specialised skills. He is attempting to survive his new life while doing his best to make amends for his past. As he finds himself losing the battle, along comes his past, which threatens to implode his life and all those who are close to him.

Action-packed and thrilling! All the way from the first chapter. The story is told from the past and the present, which brilliantly sets the scene. Simon is a character who is complex and multi-layered. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him. He is a man who has had enough, but life isn’t for letting me be. His past doesn’t help him, and the PTSD definitely doesn’t. I am sure we have only scratched the surface for now, and I am looking forward to learning more about him.

It’s was such a page-turner, one which consumed me. Every time I thought of putting the book down, it threw another curveball at me! Rob Sinclair knows how to create characters that aren’t perfect, but you find yourself caring for them. This was me with Simon! For all his issues, I couldn’t help but hope all would be well!

Yet another series I am going to be addicted too and I don’t even care! I am impatient for book 2 now!!
