The Last Wife is a psychological thriller by J.A Baker. I have read so many books by this author that I could almost guarantee that this book would be a hit! I started reading it when I knew I would be able to just read as long as I wanted to do. I am so glad I did, I enjoyed it just as much as the other books I have read by this author.

It is a dark, atmospheric story that introduces us to Fiona and Neil. A couple who have bought a cottage on a remote island in the North-East of England. This is their fresh start in order to leave behind their past. All they want is to join the community and make friends, but it seems that somebody on the island wants them gone. To further impact them, Fiona begins to notice the lack of wives on the Island and decides to find out for herself why that is.

As I said, dark and atmospheric. Along with characters that aren’t easily likeable and a mystery that adds to the tension, this added up to a story that had that eerie feeling to it. I was on edge as the story unfolded. The descriptions of the island really fired my imagination as the couple find the islanders distant towards them, making the couple feel quite isolated in their new life.

I was intrigued to get to the bottom of what was actually going on. J.A. Baker has not lost her gift of storytelling. She can weave a tale that has the reader feeling exactly what she intends you to feel. Suspense? It’s there! Tension? You got it! Again, she has created a page turner that totally takes over your life until you reach the last page. If you’re wondering what to read next, I recommend The Last Wife, any day!
