‘The Night Lawyer’ by Alex Churchill is a legal thriller with so many layers that it grabs you immediately.
Sophie Angel is a busy woman with two jobs, the main one being a young barrister and the other being a night lawyer at a newspaper – so going through articles before they are printed to make sure the paper could not be sued. It is a good job Sophie is a strong woman, she never stops! On top of all this, she has issues that have been unresolved from being a child. The reason being she is half Russian, was born in Moscow, and lived there until she was six, and feels that something was not right about that time, but cannot remember what.
The story takes us back to Russia in flashbacks then flips back to London and the courts, as I say, a many-layered story with depth and artfully weaved together. I really, loved Sophie, a great, strong female lead to the story and I felt for her with all the difficulties she had in life.
Then she gets given a new case, defending a man against his rape allegation, this alone is enough to have you on the edge of your seat! Simultaneously we see everything slowly come together, her Russian background and her uncle’s death, the problems with her marriage, everything creates a perfect storm and to top it off an escaped prisoner is after her too!

I love a good legal thriller and this is an excellent one! Not just one storyline we get a few that simmer away keeping us glued to the book, I was rooting for Sophie all the way and can’t wait to see if we see her in another instalment, I would love it if we did! Alex Churchill has created a fantastic lead protagonist with a brilliant multi-layered story in The Night Lawyer roll on the next!
Thank you to Random Things Tours and Red Door Press for the copy of the book so I could discover Sophie Angel for myself.
