Hannah Begbie – Blurred Lines

‘Blurred Lines’ by Hannah Begbie is definitely a story for today. Becky works in the film industry, has a sixteen-year-old daughter and has just had a script for a film that she has created accepted so we see her and her boss, Matthew in the process of finding a producer and scouting for actors and actresses for the parts.

The story is written from Becky’s perspective and swings back and forth between the past and present day. We see Becky as a teenager and Becky of today. In the present day, Becky decides to drop a present to Mathew for all his help one evening. Mathew has told her to not bother knocking on the door, just come in, if she calls round. Becky does just that and encounters something that proves to be the undoing of everything she holds dear.

Becky has a secret and that secret has been kept from almost everyone for sixteen years. This still affects her daily and she struggles to mentally live a normal life every day. The fact that she witnessed what she did, sends her spiralling into more confusion than ever before especially when the victim pleads for the witness to come forward for her. Becky is aware that coming forward will have a domino effect on her life, and that she has worked hard to get to the point she is. Is she willing to sacrifice what she has built for what she thinks has two sides?

In the days of #MeToo, this is a fantastic depiction of exactly what the issues are in today’s world. My heart was almost torn apart at some moments in this book. I loved the twist at the end but, again it was just heartbreaking to even to imagine what Becky has gone through and, in essence, was still experiencing. A very topical book and one which should almost be a must-read! I thought Becky was as messed up as she could be but then, as the story unfolded I realised it just triggered a whole lot more of Becky’s issues, I spent the all the story really sad for Becky and I was glad when she found some peace, she deserved it.

Thanks to Random Things Tours and the publisher for the book to write my review today.
