Jan Turk Petrie – Running Behind Time

‘Running Behind Time’ by Jan Turk Petrie is the third book I have read from this author. I have enjoyed every book that I have read, so when I was invited on this tour I was front of the queue. This book is a little different to the previous ones I have read. Number one, it is set during the Covid-19 Pandemic and number two, this is a time-slip novel. Time slips are one of my favourite type of plots, there is just something about travelling back in time that I love.

In ‘Running Behind Time’ Beth and Tom are the two main characters. We are introduced to Beth and her boyfriend Kyle in 1982 as they are waiting expectantly for a solar eclipse. We then pop to Tom in the Summer of the pandemic of 2020. He is furloughed and decided to move back in with his mum. The only trouble with moving back home is having to deal with living with another person who is also your parent! We see Tom going to London to meet a friend who may be able to help Tom get a job. As he leaves his mum’s their relationship isn’t exactly on the up. Tom gets on his train and on his journey he goes to the toilet..when he comes back the more or less empty train is full and to make matters even worse, nobody is social distancing as they should be with a pandemic of Covid-19. Is Tom seeing things, is he going mad? Only time will tell.

A very unique plot and set in a weird time for all. With characters that I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know. Beth is a feisty one and doesn’t allow herself to be backed into a corner, even when she is struggling. Tom seems the colder of the two until the story begins to unfold and you see him consciously helping Beth and not leaving her to it, which was a possibility.

The story is told through both Tom and Beth’s points of view so we get to know both characters well too. I have to say the visit back to 1982 brought back some memories for me! I was 11 and it seems so long ago. The wrinkle in time has helped to create a book that transported me away from this Covid -19 time in which we live…and I had fun escaping!

Thanks to Random Things Tours and Jan Turk Petrie for the copy of this wonderful book.
