‘How To Betray Your Country’ by James Wolff is a gripping spy thriller that I found brilliantly written, with a unique plot and characters you don’t forget easily.

We are introduced to disgraced spy August Drummond. He is in an emotional freefall after the death of his wife and has been fired for a series of security breaches and now he is on a flight to Istanbul and his neighbour will not just shut up! The only thing keeping him sane is the hunch that there’s something not quite right about the nervous young man several rows ahead – a hunch confirmed when August watches him throw away directions to a European cemetery seconds before being detained by Turkish police. A reckless August decides to go to the cemetery, where he meets a mysterious figure from the very heart of the Islamic State and before he knows it he finds himself drawn into a shadowy plot to murder an Iranian scientist in Istanbul. But nothing is what it seems. He has to attempt to break free from the Islamic States grasp and play
off British intelligence against their Turkish counterparts. He is going to discover that his resourcefulness, courage and ingenuity will be tested to the fullest.
An excellent example of an author who is a master at his craft. John Wolff has weaved a story that has it all. As I have already mentioned the unique plot and strong characters are not easily forgotten. The exquisite details that have been woven together are either excellent research or he has to have inside knowledge, they are so good.

I do love a great spy thriller and this one is top of the class for me. The twists and turns of the story were so well integrated into the story that my heart was in my mouth at times. A fantastic book! If you enjoy a spy thriller this is one to choose.
Thanks to Anne Cater from Random Things Tours for my place on the tour and Bitter Lemon Press for the copy of another excellent book.
