David Gatward – Shooting Season

‘Shooting Season’ by David Gatward is the fourth instalment in the life and times of D.C.I Harry Grimm. After moving ‘up North’, he expected to be bored out of his skull in comparison to his previous job. The previous three books have shown us just how wrong he was and now he is realising he wants to stay as well!

This book begins with Harry sorting two thugs out. They had left him a ‘message’ from his dad, by the time he has done with them he knows his dad wants to see him and they are all tied up and ready for the police to find them. An author who has written a book called ‘The Hunt’ which is partly set in the Yorkshire Dales arrives to promote the book. After attending his author events where a woman has been thrown out for claiming he has a ghostwriter and heckling him. Charlie is last seen driving away early morning and is reported missing the next day. He is discovered pretty quick and the autopsy concludes he was murdered. Harry and his team realise they really have their hands full dealing with the oddities that Is Charlie’s team and that some of them wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped them in the face! Will Harry and his team be able to get to the bottom of this death, or will their secrets stay buried?

Loved being back with Harry and his motley crew. They are a team who work well together and that’s part of the reason Harry wants to stay in this beautiful place. He trusts everyone and they trust him. Even the PCSO’s are involved in the investigation, which is fabulous to read. As always David Gatward has brought his vivid descriptions of the countryside, which gives me a feeling of being there still.
This book is a wonderful addition to the series but it can also be read on its own without feeling like you are losing the plot.

David Gatward has woven a story in which his characters are all unique and stand out for all different reasons and a plot that keeps the reader turning the pages until it reaches an ending that is, as always, a satisfying one.

Thanks to Random Things Tours and Weirdstone Publishing for my copy of the book.
