Helen H. Durrant – Two Wives

Thanks to Bookouture Books for my gifted ebook to write my honest review.

Two wives. One husband. A deadly secret…

My daughter’s latest drawing lies on the kitchen island and I smile as I see the three stick figures under the words My family. My husband Oliver left for work early, so it’s just me and my precious daughter at home. Until I hear the sound of a removals van pulling up to the house next door.

Sneaking a peek through the blinds, my heart catches in my throat as I come face to face with my new neighbour – the one person I wished to never see again. Oliver’s ex-wife, Carla, stares back at me, and the slight curl of her lip proves that she isn’t here to make friends.

Oliver owns the house next door, so why did he let her move so close to us? And why didn’t he tell me? What other secrets has he been keeping from me?

When I try to talk to Oliver that evening, he quickly shuts me down, telling me I’m worrying over nothing. But I know him well enough to see the worried look on his face as he gazes towards Carla’s house…

Oliver is up to something. And so is Carla. But they don’t know I have secrets of my own, and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to keep them.

And, days later, when police race to our house one evening, you might think you know what’s happened, but you’d be wrong. After all, nothing is what it seems behind closed doors…

An absolutely pulse-pounding psychological thriller, which is perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Perfect Marriage and You, Me, Her.

Helen H. Durrant is an author whose books I have read for years. The difference is that now she is writing psychological thrillers for a different publisher. Saying this, though, it didn’t stop me from reading the new genres. In fact, it made me want to read them even more!

Two Wives introduces us to Eve, Carla, and Jane. Three women who each have their reasons for revenge. Eve is married to Oliver, Carla is his ex-wife, and Jane is the nanny to Eve and Oliver’s daughter. What follows is a tense and twisty tale!

Things go from bad to worse when Eve’s husband’s ex-wife, Carla, moves into the house next door. The fact that her husband actually owns the home Carla has moved into makes Eve wonder why Oliver would allow this!

Jane is hired as a nanny for Eve and Oliver’s daughter, but as the story unfolds, we discover Jane is not what or who she claims. Oliver himself is not the most pleasant man and quite unpopular at work, as well as with these three women.

A deftly woven psychological thriller that is layered, twisty, and has a clever plot. I had no idea where this was going to take me; it totally had me on my toes. The characters aren’t all the most likable, and I could understand the hatred towards Oliver. I would have offered to help if I could!

It’s more than an intriguing story; I was obsessed with it. As the layers slowly peeled away, the suspense increased. Helen H. Durrant may have only written two psychological thrillers, but they are both excellent, and I really would love to see her write more! Saying that, I don’t mind which genre she writes in, as long as she writes!

Author Bio

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire – there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

She has been married forever, has two grown up daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. When she isn’t writing Helen enjoys spending time with them.
