Evelyn Hood – An Heiress’s Courage

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the gifted ebook to write my honest review.

Will holding on to the business she has inherited mean a future without love?

Port Glasgow, Scotland 1930

Morag Weir’s young life is full of responsibilities: caring for the ailing Sander Weir, the man who has raised her as his daughter; whilst managing his household and shipping business.

When Sander Weir dies, his brother Lawrence is outraged to learn that Morag will inherit Sander’s large home as well as a controlling interest in his shipping firm.

Complicating matters, Lawrence is Morag’s real father – having abandoned her when he remarried when Morag was six years old. Despite his past fickleness, Lawrence feels he has the right to control Morag’s new-found wealth.

As the business flounders, Morag must fight and find the courage to defy Lawrence and resist his efforts to overturn his brother’s will and also wrestle control from the unscrupulous men who wish to take the business from her.

While everyone around her is finding love, the man Morag has fallen for seems to want nothing more than a professional relationship.

Can hard work prevail and will Morag find a balance at work and with her love life?
Storytelling at its best, Evelyn Hood is the original bestselling Scottish saga writer.

Historical sagas are always my go-to for the cold and wet days. Evelyn Hood is an author who always writes an authentic and emotional novel. An Heiress’s Courage is again a prime example of why I think that.

Set in Scotland in the 1930s, we follow Morag. She is a young woman who has a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders. After the man,  Sander, who raised her as his own dies, she inherits the home she grew up in and a controlling share of his shipping business.

The man who is her biological father, Lawrence, thinks it should be his. He was the brother of Sander and does all he can to contest the will. Morag finds herself battling to keep her hold on the company. At the same time, she feels she has lost out on the man she loves as well . Can she realise her dreams in love while also keeping what she has been given?

Evelyn Hood is an author who takes me back to the days when I read a lot of Catherine Cookson. The descriptions of the setting are as evocative as Cookson’s always were . The characters are rich and multi-layered too. I really cared about Morag and her situation. This made it unputdownable!

The historical details swept me back in time to a decade and place I didn’t know overly much about. Such an engrossing story and one I was reluctant to finish!
