Pilgrim’s War is the first book in a brand new series!Micheal Jecks is an author who writes well researched, detailed and very well-written historical fiction. I have read other books by him and was eager to read this one.
I have great expectations when I read any of Michael Jecks books, so I hoped he could fill them. As normal, he did, It is a fabulous read. Set in 1096, crowds gather to hear the Hermit talk in France. He speaks of a great pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Alongside the Christian soldiers there are women and men who join. Pilgrim’s War is the tale of the perilous journey ahead of them.
The characters are a mix of people with different motivations. Some are naive about the journey, others are so eager to leave their lives behind. One thing they all have in common is they are all fired up by Hermit’s speeches. I got so involved with these characters that I felt like I was part of the group.
Historical fact and fiction is interwoven together so smoothly that I actually didn’t know what was the truth and what was fiction. I know the basics about the Crusades that came later, so Pilgrim’s War was an exciting and interesting story for me.
I was so pleased to feel like I was learning something again while being totally riveted to the book. Alongside the rich detailing are characters who are very well fleshed out too. It created an authentic, well-paced and exhilarating read! I am particularly looking forward to continuing this series when the next book is out!
