Adam Lofthouse – War Lord: Scourge of Rome

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the gifted ebook to write my honest review.

And so we have reached the end of my tale. But what are endings if not new beginnings?

Alaric has been home for a year. He went north and saved the Cimbri, just as he said he would. But the cost has been higher than he ever thought. A shadow of the War Lord he once was, he now trades in amber and dotes on his children.

A simple life. And with it, contentment. But he knew this couldn’t last forever; peace isn’t for someone like him, and sure enough trouble finds him once again. A routine journey south turns into a new and unknown wave of danger as red-cloaked legionaries attack, causing confusion and carnage.

Warriors dressed as Romans have been scouring the country, slaughtering innocent people, and leaving Roman footprints wherever they march.

But things are not what they seem, and it falls to Alaric to don his armour once more, and march his Ravensworn in pursuit of a mysterious enemy that could destabilise his world beyond repair.

Another fabulous chapter in The Enemy of the Empire Trilogy. Warlord: Scourge of Rome is the final book and I couldn’t put it down!

Alaric may think he has settled down and put his warrior days behind him but there is something on the horizon that will change his mind. He travels south and discovers something very unsettling when red cloaked legionnaires attack. The question is, are they Romans or not? Alaric makes the decision to, once again, put his armour on and march his Ravensworn to face an unknown enemy. Can he still do what it takes?

Alaric is a character that could be called morally grey. He isn’t a straightforward person. I didn’t want to like him at the start of this trilogy but he rubs off on you. I know I wasn’t happy that this was the final book!! I feel I will miss him!

As always with Adam Lofthouse the action is non-stop. The battles brutal and authentic, making me cringe as I read! This adds to the excitement of these books. I love history and when I read this trilogy it truly immerses me in the past. The story is rich and vivid in it’s telling. The characters are complex and layered, like Alaric.

In this book we get taken back to moments in Alaric’s life which gives us a better understanding of why he is as he is. This was perfect for me. It made him even more lifelike. I was so wrapped up reading that I read it in two sessions. I was attempting to read it slower knowing it was the final book, but I had no chance.

All I can say is thanks to Adam Lofthouse for allowing me to be a part of Alaric’s journey. If you appreciate rich and layered historical fiction pick this book or even the trilogy up. You won’t regret it!
