Verity Bright – Murder at the Royal Palace

Thanks to Bookouture for my gifted ebook to write, my honest review.

Lady Eleanor Swift has a special royal invitation. She’s got just the right dress and the perfect plus one… But wait! Is that a body by the throne?

Lady Eleanor Swift is at Buckingham Palace to see her new husband, Detective Chief Inspector Seldon, knighted. Brimming with pride, all she can hope is that Gladstone the bulldog behaves himself in front of the king.

But the happy day is overshadowed when Dilly Dalrymple, a royal guard, collapses. The head of the royal police asks Eleanor and Hugh to investigate the murder – unofficially. This is her first clue that there’s more to the story…

Donning a disguise as a journalist for a well-to-do magazine, Eleanor, with butler Clifford posing as her photographer interview the high-profile guests and residents at the palace. She wasn’t expecting gossiping wives, affairs aplenty and talk of long-lost treasure! Was Dilly killed to settle an old score or was he perhaps a little too close to someone else’s wife?

But when another soldier is murdered at midnight, hours after the palace gates are locked, Eleanor knows she needs to keep her wits about her… And when everyone seems to have a reason to lie, can Eleanor dig up the truth before it’s her head next?

A totally gripping royal whodunnit full of twists, set in 1920s London. Fans of T.E. Kinsey, Catherine Coles and Lee Strauss will be utterly obsessed!

My Review

I don’t need to read the blurb with a Verity Bright book. I just automatically want to read it. Murde at the Royal Palace is the 23rd book of the series, and it is a fresh as the first! As the title tells you, it is set around the Royal buildings. I was particularly intrigued with what Verity Bright had come up with this time!

Lady Eleanor Swift and Hugh, her husband, are at the Palace for him to receive his knighthood. While there is someone else who is also receiving an honour from the King collapses. Eleanor tries to help him until he is taken to hospital. Sadly, he passes away. The police determine it was due to illness, while Eleanor isn’t as certain. When Hugh is asked to look into the death by the man’s brother and Chief of the Royal Police, Eleanor springs into action with Clifford. Eleanor goes undercover to see if she can get to the bottom of it all. The dead man was a Beefeater and Raven Master at the Tower of London, and she discovers a community filled with jealousy, secrets, and betrayal. Will she be able to use her skills to discover the truth?

This is a fabulous historical cosy mystery! I was so happy to learn the history around the Tower of London. The characters are always second to none, with a great mix of old and new. All impeccably developed to make the reader invest in the important ones and guess which ones are the culprits in the case!

Again, it can be read as part of the series or as a standalone. There is enough information included to make it easily readable alone. Every single book, without a doubt, puts a smile on my face! The banter between Eleanor and Clifford always gives me a good chuckle!

The mystery of the case made for an intriguing read. I enjoyed it so much! Anither cracker of a read!
