My Review
Historical sagas always give me that warm, fuzzy feeling. The Irish Midwife is set in the 1930s in Ireland, and we meet Peggy Cassidy, a woman who works as a milly in the Belfast linen mills. She also works as an illegal midwife, known as a handywoman. She helps women in her community in their time of need.
There are changes ahead and romance, too, but can she allow herself to completely fall in love when her history and family need protecting too?
This is the first time I have heard of this author, but I couldn’t wait to get to know Peggy Cassidy. I have never been to Ireland, but the sense of community reminded me of our communities back before the NHS and when the mills and mines were the main source of employment.
I was rooting for Peggy Cassidy from the start. She had everything going against her in 1930s Ireland, her class, her gender and what she did to help the women. Seána Tinley has definitely created characters that have stolen my heart. I didn’t want to go to sleep until I finished. I was so immersed in this era that I felt like I had left modern life behind. The midwifery just reminded me of the Call the Midwife series on the tv.
A brilliant start to a new series that is full of heart! Full of nostalgia, emotions, and community, I am so glad I have been introduced to this series!!
