Trisha Sakhlecha – The Inheritance

Thanks to Tracy Fenton of Compulsive Readers for my invitation to the book tour and my gifted book to write my honest review today.

On a private island off the west coast of Scotland, the Agarwals gather for a much-awaited family reunion.

Rajthe patriarch and business tycoon, who has six weeks to decide how to split his petrochemicals empire between his three children.

Shalinithe fragile mother, who longs to see her family healed.

Myra, the eldest daughter and golden child, who, unbeknownst to the family, is on the brink of bankruptcy.

Aseemthe son and supposed heir, who must choose between his wife and his family.

Aishathe fun-loving youngest daughter, who is tired of being treated like a child.

And Zoe, the outsider whose #Instaperfect life is built on a foundation of lies.

Everyone has a secret – but only one would kill to protect it…

My Review

The Inheritance is the first book I have read by this author. The cover and the blurb both screamed. “Read Me!”. I am so glad I did.

Set on a remote scottish island owned by Myra Argawal, the eldest daughter of Raj. He owns a company in Dehli that’s worth millions. Aseem, Myra’s brother, is currently running the company due to their father’s health. Every member of the Argawal family has travelled to be with the family.   Aseem and his wife Zoe, an instagram influencer. Aisha is the baby of the family and appears with her latest boyfriend. This family get together is to celebrate their parents 40th wedding anniversary. The siblings are all expecting an announcement about their fathers company as well. Will everything go as expected? Or is there more than meets the eye?

An unusual thriller in that we know someone is dead immediately. The fact it takes place on a remote scottish island brings plenty of atmosphere to the tale as well. The family ties and sibling bonds are brought to the fore in this well written plot. The stresses and strains that come with keeping secrets are crystal clear. Every sibling is banking on their fathers announcement. Each for their own personal reasons.

Told mainly by Myra and Zoe, we get to know what makes them tick. How Zoe feels apart from her in-laws because she is Caucasian and wants different things than the in-laws think she should. Myra carries so much. She has done as much as she can with sorting the island, and now she needs the inheritance like yesterday.

Then Aisha, dragging Gabe, a stranger to the get-together. She usually gets away with anything because she is the spoilt youngest. This time, she has caused shock waves through the family. Will they brush this aside like usual?

With the interweaving tensions and secrets everyone has kept for years, the atmosphere is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The fact that certain characters definitely hold enough anger and bitterness to be the one who could commit the murder makes the reader sit up and see everything as the plot unfolds.

I was glued to The Inheritance, and as time passed, I was on the edge of my seat. Every character has you questioning, could it be them? Or them… it just shows that even rich families can have a dark and twisted side.
