Joanne Ryan – The Sister In Law

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books, for the gifted ebook to write my honest review.

Would you invite a stranger in?

When Megan loses her beloved husband, Rick, in a tragic car accident, she feels like it’s her own life that has ended. She feels too young to be a widow. Walking around the house that had been their home – so quiet without him – nothing feels the same.

But at his funeral, she sees a face she doesn’t recognise. A heavily-pregnant young woman, with a sweet heart-shaped face that is somehow a little familiar. This stranger introduces herself as Emily, Rick’s estranged sister. She explains how she’s been searching for her brother for years, but – as she bursts into noisy sobs – she knows she’s too late now.

Megan finds herself taking pity on the sister-in-law she’d never met. And quickly Emily becomes more and more a part of her life, even moving into the spare room of her house.

It feels less empty than before. And at first it’s comforting to Megan. But – even when it’s a relative of the man you loved more than anyone – can you trust a stranger?

A totally unputdownable psychological crime thriller, guaranteed to have readers up all night turning the pages! Perfect for fans of Frieda McFadden, Daniel Hurst and Lisa Jewell.

My first book by Joanne Ryan, and what a read!  It is definitely a psychological thriller that keeps you gripped. Well, I was anyway!

Megan loses her husband in a tragic car accident. She feels that her life has ended, too. At his funeral, a young pregnant woman she doesn’t know tells her she is Emily, Ricks’ estranged sister. She says she has been trying to find him for years and through heart-rending sobs, tells Megan she knows it too late now.

Megan decides to give Emily a chance and soon becomes part of her life. She moves into Megan’s spare room, and life becomes a little more bearable for her. The question is, can Emiy be trusted? She is a total stranger…

What a read! Told by both women in alternate chapters, we get to see both perspectives. I do enjoy that, especially when you dont know who you should be trusting if any of them. I could feel the tension and the suspense building.

I couldn’t read fast enough for myself. I needed to know everything, as the plot unfolded. It’s definitely an intriguing read and one of those ‘one more chapter’ books. I have to admit it was more like, “I have to finish this book!” Gripped wasn’t really the word for how I found myself reading this. The twists just kept coming, and the conclusion! Well, you will find out.

Another cracker of a psychological thriller, by an author who has been added to my go-to author list. Highly recommend reading.
