Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the gifted ebook to write my honest review for the book tour today.

Seven-year-old Lissie Fairweather is the apple of her father’s eye, but when a tragedy strikes their family, Lissie must make her own way in the world.
Dora Fairweather wasn’t cut out to be a wife and mother, and as soon as she’s able, she turns her back on her young daughter Lissie. With no parents to protect her, Lissie has no option but the dangerous streets of soot-sodden Bradford or the workhouse orphanage. Life in the orphanage is bleak and Lissie longs for the warm embrace of her beloved father.
As the years pass, Lissie learns to enjoy the camaraderie of the other girls in the workhouse, and when she’s taken under the wing of matron Connie Briggs, things begin to look up. A move to the seaside of Scarborough, friends and even love are finally within Lissie’s grasp.
But she can never forget her father, cobbler Tom Fairweather, and the terrible secret she has carried all these years. Can her heart ever truly be at peace unless she finally discovers his fate? And with the drumbeats of war on the horizon, what will be the fate of the lass who survived the workhouse…

I’m always guaranteed a fabulous read when I read a Chrissie Walsh novel. It does help that she writes historical sagas that are impeccably researched.
The Workhouse Lass is set between 1903 and 1917. Lissie is seven years old and the apple of her father’s eye. When tragedy strikes and Lissie is left with a mother who has no interest in her daughter. They move to Bradford, where Lissie is left at a workhouse to fend for herself. She survives the years to be taken under the wing of a matron Connie were things start to become better for Lissie. A move to Scarborough enriches her life even more. Lissie couldn’t be happier, apart from finding out what happened to him. Will she be able to find the answers she is looking for?
An emotional historical saga that made me so connected to Lissie. The characters are created so well. Lissie had me wrapped around her little finger from the moment I started reading. My heart went out to her totally. It’s not just emotional, though. There is humour too. One minute, I was almost crying, and the next, I couldn’t help smiling a little, at least.
Another book that doesn’t just whisk you away. It also educates, too. This is always something I appreciate. I am someone who soaks up history and the facts very happily. Yet another book I couldn’t, and wouldn’t put down. Immersive, well written, and addictive. I finished it way too soon for my liking! It’s definitely a story with heart.
