Gregg Olsen – Cougar Point

Thanks to Bookouture Books for my gifted ebook to write my honest review as part of the book tour.

She wakes to find herself alone in complete darkness. Fearing for her life, in that moment her only thought is for her beloved daughters. What will they think when they find out she’s missing? Then it hits her. She’s kept a secret hidden from her family for years. Is she about to pay for it with her life?

When Victoria Marsh disappears from her family’s exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington, her family is devastated. A charity worker and pillar of the local community, how could she just vanish without a trace?

Though not officially her case, Detective Megan Carpenter races to the scene for a very personal reason. Victoria is Ronnie’s mother and Megan will do anything to help her when she has sacrificed so much.

Together they build up a picture of the days before the disappearance but the only clue is a note with the words, “You promised” scrawled on it. It soon emerges that Victoria’s marriage was far from perfect and she had spent years running from a deadbeat brother. Could someone in Victoria’s family want her dead?

But when the body of another woman is found, Megan starts to link the cases. Both women had huge ransoms placed on them. Both families received chilling threats in the mail. And with one victim already dead, time is running out to find Victoria alive.

Local law enforcement warns Megan off the case but she’s certain that the disappearance is more than just bad blood. But with a potential serial killer on the loose, how much is Megan willing to risk? Worse still, could they be closer to her than she had ever imagined?

The fifth book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series, Cougar Point, is a crime thriller with a cover that caught my attention immediately. I was so intrigued with the blurb that I began reading as soon as it landed on my Kindle.

I was happy to see Gregg Olsen did add some bits of what had happened previously in the series as it’s been a while since I read the earlier books. This makes it ok to read as a standalone, but in my opinion, a series should be read in order to appreciate the character developments, etc.

This author is one who never lets me down. He promises so much with the blurb, and he always fulfils those promises, too. There is tension, intrigue, and suspense by the bucketful in every book I have read by him.

Megan is a character I always love returning to. She does have a habit of making me smile with the way she is. This book sees her getting involved in something out of her jurisdiction. This case is personal to her, and no amount of no’s will change her mind! Told from multiple perspectives, I was hooked from the prologue to the final page.

The way the plot is woven together kept me thinking and trying to piece everything together before I found out the actual answers. The characters are all vivid and detailed. I could see them all as I read. There were so many dodgy ones throughout that I couldn’t make up my mind as the story unfolded.

Cougar Point will have you on the edge of your seat and flipping the pages as fast as you can! It did me anyway! Highly recommended read.
