This is the debut novel of author Ninette Hartley.
Loose Ends is a historical fiction novel that’s set in Yorkshire through the second world war years. This is a genre and a period I love to read about, so I had no qualms about reading this book.
We meet Ness and Eileen. Two friends who work in the same factory. Eileen decides to stitch Ness’s name and address inside 2 shirts commissioned for Naval officers. This act alone alters Ness’s life, and we follow her journey for good and bad through to 1953.
Ninette Hartley’s debut and one which has been written from the heart. The research is impeccable, and the characters are so easily invested in. From the first page, I was intrigued with Ness and Eileen and what was going to happen as the plot unfolded. Ness is a girl who has trials and tribulations ahead, and she faces them dead on. I felt her strength and determination pour from the pages as I witnessed her mature through the years.
The story is one that kept me turning the pages until I almost fell asleep reading. Nothing goes to plan in life, and Ninette Hartley definitely twists the knife. It is emotional and definitely not a predictable story. It’s a well written novel that left me thinking, that’s for sure.
