I always enjoy John Nicholl’s books, so I was looking forward to reading The Holiday as soon as I could. He has a knack for creating a dark and twisting tale that grips the reader immediately.
The characters John Nicholl creates are ones that aren’t necessarily nice. The ones we are introduced to in The Holiday, Suzie and George, are such examples. Married but not happily and not willing, for differing reasons to walk away. George’s reasons are that Suzie has won some money and he wants it for himself, but Suzie herself knows her husband and isn’t planning to give way. The question is, how far is George willing to go?
The sense of place is well done. The detailed description made for a vivid picture as I read. The way John has written the story made me think I had everything worked out until I realised I hadn’t at all. His storytelling is always of a high standard, and his latest book is no different.
I couldn’t put The Holiday down for any longer than I really had to. I felt like I’d been armchair travelling reading this. I was sad to find the last few chapters were looming and wished I hadn’t read it so fast!
