Fay Abernethy – Learning to Fly Alien Spacecraft

Today, I’m part of Rachel’s Random Resources blog tour for Learning To Fly Alien Spacecraft by Fay Abernethy. Thanks to both Rachel and Fay Abernathy for the gifted book to write my honest review

What if the secret alien space station protecting the Earth went PUBLIC?

Hanna Abebe has come far since leaving Ethiopia. All the way to the other end of the galaxy, in fact. And although her course at the Essoona Pilots’ Academy is tough, it’s not as tough as maintaining the ultimate long-distance relationship . . .

Astronaut Dan Simpson is furious. The Galaksi Alliance have exiled him on a remote planet to stop him telling NASA about them before they’re ready. But by the time they come to take him home, Dan
has fallen in love with an enigmatic alien and decides to stay. Only then does he discover what a perilous business his new girlfriend is involved in . . .

At last! Captain Joe Llewellyn has permission to initiate first contact via the UN. But if he messes it up, the Galaksi Alliance could cancel the Shantivira’s funding, leaving the Earth defenceless. So, no pressure. All goes well until a rogue Samaritan flies a cargo ship through months of painstaking negotiations . . .

This character-driven eco science fantasy is a must-read for fans of Becky Chambers, Ursula Le Guin, Douglas Adams and Doctor Who.

A sci-fi fantasy story that sounded a tad unusual, so, me being me, decided to join the tour. I do enjoy a quirky read, and that’s what I got with Learning to Fly Alien Spacecraft. I actually didn’t realise it was the second book of a series, so I embarked upon a journey that took me away from Earth! What I will say is I ended up reading the first book after this. Yes, back to front!

Being the second book, it took me a little time to get to grips with everything, but I wasn’t badly confused. I was soon at home with the diverse and well created characters from Fay Abernethy’s imagination. It may be a sci-fi tale, but it examines issues that our planet needs to work on. Ones such as climate change and sustainability. Just these did make me think that more authors should highlight issues. Maybe more people would notice than they do now.

I enjoyed feeling like I was with Hanna as she learned to fly an alien spacecraft. The world building was another massive plus. I was transported to the Shantivera and the other settings as the action unfolded.

Like I say, I read The Cleaner The Cat and the Spacestation after, and it helped in understanding the whole story of this book. I also knew Hanna better. The fact that this book ended on a cliffhanger does mean I need to read book three! That’s another new author I have discovered! I love my hobby!

Author Bio

Fay Abernethy

Fay Abernethy left the UK more than twenty years ago, seeking adventure.
When not diving with sharks or falling off horses, she worked as an engineer in the automotive industry. Later, she started her own translating business and settled down in Germany with the man of her dreams.
Pre-children, they explored the Alps together – on foot in summer and on skis or snowshoes in winter. She now lives the life of a respectable citizen, having discovered that being a parent is the
greatest adventure of them all. Why does she write? To find out what happens next, of course!
