Today, I’m really happy to say I’m part of the book tour for Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh. Thanks to Tracy Fenton of Compulsive Readers and Orbit Books for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
While we live, the enemy shall fear us.
All her life Kyr has trained for the day she can avenge the destruction of planet Earth by an all-powerful, reality-shifting weapon known as the Wisdom. Raised in the bowels of Gaea Station alongside the last scraps of humanity, she is one of the best warriors of her generation, the sword of a dead planet.
Then Command assigns her brother to certain death and relegates her to the nursery to bear sons until she dies trying and she knows she must take humanity’s revenge into her own hands. But she soon learns that not everything she’s been raised to believe is true and the Wisdom is far more complex and dangerous than she could ever have imagined.
A thrillingly told space opera about the wreckage of war, the family you find and who you must become when every choice is stripped from you.
Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh is her debut space opera novel. Although she has written several novellas but I haven’t read anything by her. After reading the blurb, I was really curious about this book. I had no expectations, so I went in with an open mind.
A dark space opera story with characters that you don’t necessarily like as the story opens. Saying this Kyr, our main character is young, and her character development is second to none throughout the story.
This is such a rich tale with worldbuilding that places you in the world of Emily Tesh’s imagination immediately. The characters are ones that spring to life from the vivid details. The storyline is not an easy read due to the sensitive issues that are raised. These include genocide and sexual assault among other issues. I have to say, I appreciated every skillfully crafted sentence.
A book that begins slowly, but as the story develops, so does the pace and the compulsion to keep reading! I loved this book so much. It creeps up on you, and before you know it, it’s past 2am in the morning, but you have to keep reading. I’m looking forward to Emily Tesh’s next book.
