Carli Morris is looking forward to a quiet retirement after the blockbuster sale of her Madison Avenue ad agency. The heartbreaking discovery of a homeless woman poisoned to death on a Manhattan sidewalk causes a change of plans and reopens the wounds of Carli’s own tragic loss.
Carli throws herself on a mission to get the vulnerable off the streets. But as she sacrifices her own needs to support others, her new colleague’s mental illness and Carli’s unresolved grief collide in a staggering sequence of events that will alter her life forever.
Clean Sweep is a dynamic literary novel that tackles the tough questions of homelessness, poverty, mental illness, and addiction. If you like moving revelations, gut-wrenching decisions, and life-affirming transformations, then you’ll love E. B. Lee’s enlightening tale.
Clean Sweep is a book I was expecting to be quite a heavy and intense read. The storyline being about the plight of the homeless and how Carli, a wealthy, retired entrepreneur makes it her mission to help the homeless. She becomes so deeply involved with them that her own unresolved issues start to rise to the surface.
I thought it was an emotional read as we see the raw pictures of the homeless, not the flash streets of America we see on the TV constantly. Instead we are given the vivid pictures of the dark and desperate streets that the hopeless live on. I always knew that there where a lot of homeless people I Ameica but the sheer amount this story highlighted mad me so sad.
Carli’s selfless act just showed me that just one person taking time out of their day can make all the difference. Such a thought-provoking read, it was almost like a rabbit going down a hole for me, the places this book sent my mind. It does seem to have religious overtures, but then Carli is working with a church programme, so what can be expected? It didn’t bother me one way or another though with no impact on my enjoyment of the story at any point.
All in all, Clean Sweep is a story that is heavy on the emotions and I would say it could be educational to some people as well. It isn’t all dark and gloomy, even with the homeless theme. There are other more positive things like the power of love and how you can trust in a proper friend.
A very clever and compelling piece of literary fiction that I feel could be an important read for these days.
