I’m happy to say I have Dead Drift by Kelly Romero on the blog today. Apologies to Rachel Gilbey and Kelly Romero for my late posting. Thank you both for my place on the tour and my copy of the book.
Two teenage girls on the run with fake IDs and a beater car…what could go wrong?
Emmy has always been impulsive. She is no longer a minor and has aged out of foster care. When her best friend, Amber, is the target of a perverted uncle who lives in the basement of her group home, they plan her escape.
They head for Canada, where Amber will be safe, and the foster care system can no longer control their lives. When they come across a whitewater rafting brochure, they decide to take a detour for one last adventure before leaving the country. Emmy and Amber have no idea it will be a decision that will forever change their fates.
The rafting town is so far in the middle of nowhere that Emmy’s car radio catches nothing but static. They consider turning around until a truck pulls up, loaded with hot whitewater rafting guides and rubber rafts–just the fun they were looking for. Ignoring every instinct, they turn off the pavement and follow the truck down an isolated dirt road. They end up in Lodell, the town where a girl went missing the previous summer…and she will not be the last.

Dead Drift is one of those thriller that you know you are going to love and I wasn’t wrong. Kelly Romero’s deftly woven story kept me on my toes constantly as it played out.
Told from the point of view of Emmy, one of two girls on the run in search of a better life but end up with more than they bargained for. It also gives us the killer’s perspective as well. If there is anything I can guarantee I love in a thriller it’s a killers perspective, especially when that killer is an unknown. It makes for such an atmospheric and creepy read.
The characters are so well drawn. Emmy is one who has experienced both ups and downs through life and is still hanging in there. She and Amber have been through things no child should have too but they are still there, ready for adventure. They were so relatable and Emmy’s insecurities where so understandable, and human too. I have to admit, my maternal side definitely rose to the surface with these girls.
The killer’s chapters made for a chilling and scary read. These alone racked the atmosphere right up. I was on the edge of my seat at certain times as I read this book.
A book that had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. I kept thinking I knew the killer until something else made me realise I was wrong. Such a clever thriller that was all the more disturbing due to it feeling so realistic.
