This is a debut thriller from Louis Van Schalkwyk. After receiving my invitation for this tour, I read the blurb and it really intrigued me. I really hoped that the pages held the promise of the blurb and the cover.
Ellis is a family man, married with a daughter. One day he goes to work and when he arrives he finds a SWAT team there. He gets picked up and thrown into a police van, accused of a crime he didn’t commit and knows nothing about.
The Discarded begins in a way that lulls you into a false sense of security. The calmness belies the brutality and chaos that are within this thriller. Fast paced and exciting, I raced through this book in no time at all.
Louis Van Schalkwyk has written an original and rollercoaster of a story. He successfully makes this such a suspenseful read. The tensions rise throughout and Ellis’s family and his solicitor can’t get to the bottom of what’s happening to him, or even where Ellis is and why they are being followed too. I was as on edge as his family as the story u folded.
There is so much packed into this story that it is almost a blended mix of genres, Crime, mystery, suspense and a thriller too. It works well and grips the reader from beginning to end. A great debut, that I suspect is going to be on so many people’s reading lists this year.

Louis van Schalkwyk was born in South Africa and currently resides in Hong Kong. “The Discarded” is his debut novel, inspired by years honing his writing skills and drawing influence from his favorite authors.
