I’m pleased to say I’m part of The Lieutenant’s Girl by Shari J. Ryan book tour on behalf of Bookouture Books. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of the book to take part.

Pearl Harbor, 1941. War planes hurtle across the horizon, skimming the clouds. Gunpowder fills the air as the earth shatters. Everett’s hands cup my cheeks. “If I lose you, Elizabeth, please know that the time I’ve spent with you has been worth every second I’ve been alive.”
On the fateful day that sirens rend the air and warplanes fly over the harbor, Elizabeth and Everett had sneaked away to whisper sweet nothings to each other. As bombs rain down, they cling to each other, the ground shaking and smoke suffocating them. Miraculously, they survive—but their world is ripped apart. The beautiful island, where the turquoise ocean once lapped the golden sand, is destroyed.
Over a sweltering summer, the couple had fallen madly in love. Elizabeth was in awe of Everett’s sacrifices for the Air Force, and Everett adored strong-willed Elizabeth, a Jewish girl who defied her father’s wishes for a sheltered life by training to be a nurse.
But tragedy changes everything. Although they are hopelessly devoted to one another, they vow to serve their country. Elizabeth joins the Army Nurse Corps in Europe and Everett flies across the world chasing down the enemy. With a tearful goodbye, they promise to write.
When Everett’s letters stop arriving, heartbroken Elizabeth fears the worst. Will she ever see the love of her life again? And what chance does she have of surviving Europe, where Hitler’s tyrannical rule places her in grave danger?
Fans of The Girls of Pearl Harbor, The Alice Network and The Tattooist of Auschwitz will be utterly addicted to this unputdownable tear-jerker about the heartbreaking reality of war and the power of love to overcome all.
Historical fiction is a genre I always love. No matter which period the books set in. The Lieutenant’s Girl is told over a dual timeline 2018 and during the war years. Shari J.Ryan is not an author I have come across before so I had no expectations as I read this book.
Elizabeth and Everett have taken a picnic breakfast to enjoy the early morning sunrise. They find their peace shattered by Japanese bombers in the distance. They arrive at the port, they can’t believe what they witness. Bombs raining down on Pearl Habor’s military ships, the scene terrifying, people screaming, alarms sounding out.
Elizabeth goes against her Lieutenant fathers wishes and joins the Army Nurse Corps and finds herself in Europe and Everett goes missing while fighting in Europe. Will this young couple ever find their way back to each other or is this true love lost?
The Lieutenant’s Daughter shows the horror of Pearl Harbor, and while I have seen films of this time, this book really made me think about the effect of the war on the people there at that time. The author has definitely done her research thoroughly as the scenes really made me emotional and I couldn’t help but get invested in this couple.
We learn about Elizabeth and Everett as the story moves from 2018 as Elizabeth is being interviewed by her Grandson in law, back to the war years. Vividly told so I could picture the settings throughout. I was hoping that she would find her Everett and was right by her side. It’s written that well that I felt like I was by her side too.
Definitely a skilfully woven historical, romance story, that’s emotional and touched my heart as well. A great retelling of the horror that was Pearl Harbor and the ensuing war for America. If you love a detailed historical romance then pick up The Lieutenant’s Daughter.
