I’m happy to say I have Finding Ruby by J.A Higgins on the blog on behalf of Rachel’s Random Resources today. Thanks to Rachel Gilbey and Silverwood Books for my copy of the book.
On Halloween night thirteen year old Ruby disappears in the company of a masked figure. She is never seen again. The only witness is Nell Montague who is just seven years old.
Twenty three years later, Nell is trapped in an abusive relationship and still suffering from vivid nightmares of what she saw. When tragedy strikes she escapes and attempts to put her past behind her. Then thirteen year old Emily disappears.
Haunted by increasingly disturbing visions and helped by a reluctant psychic, Nell must unravel the mystery of what really happened that night because to save Emily she must first find Ruby. But to do so she will question everything she thought she knew about her own childhood and soon discovers that nightmares don’t always end when you wake up.

A new author AND a new series! There is nothing better. Finding Ruby is a fast-paced mystery that introduces us to Nell Montague who saw a crime, connected to the disappearance of Ruby when she was younger. In the present day, twenty-three years later, Nell, who is in an abusive relationship finds a chance to escape, which she does. Then the crime she saw in her younger days comes back with a vengeance and the story is told over dual timelines, the past and the present, and we travel back and forth between the two.
This is the beginning of such a promising series. Finding Ruby has dark elements which some readers may need to be aware of. The author has brought issues that are quite sensitive but dealt with perfectly within the storyline. This is a multi-layered plot, which creates a depth that makes a satisfying read.
I liked Nell as a character. She is in such a bad place at the start of her relationship, but she managed to get out. Only for her past to trigger again. The character development is solid as the story unfolds, we see Nell, finding herself and this was good to see. I enjoyed being witness to it all.
It is a mystery with supernatural aspects too, which I always enjoy reading, I think it adds an edge to the story. One that adds to the suspense and mystery. I enjoyed the way the author has woven this tale, with many threads and pulled them together seamlessly. The twists and turns just kept me reading because I am someone who can’t put a book down. After all, I need to know what’s going to be next.
A great read, and one that brings a great character in Nell. I am looking forward to learning more about her. A recommended read.
