Today I’m happy to have Five Dead Men by Rachel Green on the blog, on behalf of Rachel’s Random Resources. Thanks to Rachel Gilbey and Rachel Green for the copy of the book to take part.
When the bodies of five men are discovered in a secret vault at the villa Belle Époque, suspicion falls upon the villa’s former owner, enigmatic Pascal Deveraux.
Actor, gambler, general good-for-nothing – Pascal has lived a life of privilege and excess. But with no evidence to implicate him in murder, the case goes unsolved.
Called in to investigate the cold case, it’s not long before Margot’s enquiries re-open old wounds. Aided by policière municipale, Alia Leon, the investigation moves swiftly from the smugglers’ trails of the Pyrenees to the cannabis clubs of Barcelona. And it’s there, in the dark medieval streets of the city’s Gothic Quarter, that someone finds a reason to silence her.

This is the second book in the Madame Renard Investigates series. I haven’t read the first book in the series but it was easy enough to enjoy on its own. I didn’t really know what to expect so I kept an open mind and started to read.
A book that takes us through the French countryside right through to the sidestreets of Barcalona Gothic Quarter. These are places I have never seen, so I soaked up the atmospheric writing easily.
Margot and Alia are trying to get to the bottom of a cold case. This leads them to siblings who aren’t what I would call normal. Pascal Deveraux is odd, very odd and his sister is also really strange. Margot is immediately suspicious of Pascal, due to the twisted games he is partial to playing g with people. They end up following a trail that leads them through France to Barcalona.
I like these two women. Margot, is perfect in her role as investigator and with a husband who was a police officer, it seems the natural instinct has passed to her. Alia, is solid as her back up and she proves herself on this investigation.
I was surprised that I got straight into this book. Margot is a character that I was interested in finding out everything about. As I have said the details of the settings are really great, vivid in the telling. I could see the places in my minds eye as I read.
It is a dark story at times, but there are lighter moments throughout. A thriller with enough twists that make it a gripping and intriguing read. I shouldn’t be surprised but I feel I need to read the first book, at all!
