This week I have been really lucky to have more than one original and different type of book to review. The Secret Couple is one of those books. Everything made me so intrigued by this book; the cover and the synopsis grabbed my attention straightaway.
A psychological thriller that introduces us to Alice,a solicitor, who specialises in depending abused women. Joseph, her husband of three years, has just confessed to an affair. One that he stresses took place before they were together and with the receptionist at their joint place of work.
She travels to Bath to meet an anonymous,prospective client. When she arrives she finds that the person doesn’t turn up. She meets Luke the bartender and discovers it was him that contacted her. As they spend time together she finds herself falling for him. Do they really know each other, or is there something darker at play?
A twisty thriller that has characters so flawed that it doesn’t make for an easy straightforward plot. I couldn’t make up my mind about Alice for a start, she had me chopping and changing my opinion of her constantly. In fact every character has been so well developed that I felt like they all had their own secrets to hide. I was kept in suspense throughout.
The Secret Couple is written in such a way that I felt like I was stood on quicksand and I didn’t have a solid ground under my feet. The secrets were bubbling, just under the surface, and it felt like they would just be spilled out at any moment. It gave me the rollercoaster feel, my emotions were all over the place reading this.
It is a dark story, filled with issues that could trigger some people. Secrets, abuse, manipulation, lies, love, jealousy and lust there aren’t many left out if this story that had me gripped. The characters gave the story more depth and authenticity with their multiple layers and so many secrets that left me turning the pages to discover what bombshell would be next!
A very well written, original and intriguing psychological thriller from J.S Lark. I most certainly loved it.
