A psychological thriller by Emily Shiner is a reason for me to get excited. I have read her two previous thrillers and loved them both. The cover of The Caretaker is an atmospheric one that is perfect for the story.
We are introduced to a young couple, Tim and Amy. They have bought their ‘forever home’ without visiting it before they move in. They realise it’s not in as good a condition as they expect so hire a Caretaker to do the things around the house. Paul is the perfect candidate for the job, so they hire him…is he as perfect as he seems, or is there more than meets the eye?
The Caretaker starts at a good pace and it doesn’t take long to start building the tension, and it’s a tension that doesn’t stop at all. Emily Shiner is such a skilful storyteller, I always feel like I am part of the story, by the side of the characters. I could certainly feel the tension between Amy and Tim. The fact that they are attempting to move on from a bit of a rocky start to their marriage,makes for an edge of the seat read.
I liked all three of the characters. They all made me feel like I could get behind them and cheer them all. Even when we start learning more about them, I still felt like I could back them.
A psychological thriller that has more than one story thread and these run side by side as the story develops. The final chapter is one that is worth waiting for! The Caretaker is full of twists that you don’t see coming, and that makes for an intense, compelling and addictive read.

Emily Shiner always dreamed of becoming an author but first served her time as a banker and a teacher. After a lifetime of devouring stacks of thrillers, she decided to try her hand at writing them herself.
