I’m pleased to say I am part of the book tour for The Coronation by Justin Newland on behalf of ZooLoo’s Book Tours. Thanks to Zoe and Matador Books for the copy of the book to take part.
It is 1761. Prussia is at war with Russia and Austria. As the Russian army occupies East Prussia, King Frederick the Great and his men fight hard to win back their homeland.
In Ludwigshain, a Junker estate in East Prussia, Countess Marion von Adler celebrates an exceptional harvest. But this is soon requisitioned by Russian troops. When Marion tries to stop them, a Russian Captain strikes her. His Lieutenant, Ian Fermor, defends Marion’s honour, but is stabbed for his insubordination. Abandoned by the Russians, Fermor becomes a divisive figure on the estate.
Close to death, Fermor dreams of the Adler, a numinous eagle entity, whose territory extends across the lands of Northern Europe and which is mysteriously connected to the Enlightenment. What happens next will change the course of human history…

This is the third book I have read by Justin Newland and the third one I have just devoured. Historical fantasy blended with the supernatural is so immersive. I love history anyway so the synopsis just made me snap up my invite to review The Coronation.
Julian Newland has a way with words that has transported me to whichever setting his books have been in. This time it’s Prussia 1761 where Marion Grafin Von Adler her family and the villagers who work for her estate and live there too are celebrating the Feast of the Assumption. We see Marion stand up to Russian soldiers, who are trying to take her harvest. This culminates in a spiritual journey for Marion and a supernatural one for a soldier that comes to her aid.
Again he has written a historical fantasy story that intertwines in a way that makes it such an interesting book. His characters are so well drawn and fleshed out. I was so absorbed with this particular book and the multiple layers to it I knew I wouldn’t be able to leave it for any length of time. His world building is again so good, I find this with every book he has written and The Coronation has proved his skill in creating a world for the reader to be captivated by.
It is a well written tale that doesn’t blur the lines as the multiple threads of the story play out. He makes the spiritual message clear as everything comes together. I was turning the pages at a speed even I was surprised at. The fact that he even interweaves the Industrial Revolution in too, makes it an even more intriguing read for me.
The Coronation is a historical fantasy book has made sure I won’t miss any of Justin Newlands’ books in the future. A bright new name for those who love history and fantasy, with a few twists!
