Today I’m taking part in books on tour for Bookouture. I must apologise as this review is late! Thanks to Bookouture for my gifted copy of the book to take part.
For seven years I believed my husband was dead – until the note arrived this morning…
The day her husband Tom disappeared, Rachel’s life fell apart. Childhood sweethearts with two young children, they’d done everything together. And then, suddenly, Tom was gone. Without a word, without a note, without a single sign of where he might be, leaving Rachel to survive alone.
Now, nearly seven years later, Rachel has come to terms with life as a single mother, caring for their children who still secretly long for their father’s miraculous return.
But in his absence, Tom’s hidden life started to emerge, and Rachel has discovered things a wife should never have to. A secret life that betrayed everything Rachel thought she knew. Not knowing where he’d gone was no longer the main worry keeping her awake at night – it seemed much more likely he’d been silenced. Forever.
Until today, when – with just one month until Tom is to be declared legally dead – Rachel receives a note in handwriting she recognises with dread:
My darling, I’ve missed you so much. Give me a chance to explain. I’m coming home.
The husband she’d lost is alive.
And so are all his secrets…
A totally addictive and suspenseful thriller that will have you reading late into the night, perfect for fans of Shari Lapena, T.M. Logan and Lisa Jewell.

The Widow’s Husband by Lesley Sanderson is a psychological thriller by an author that I know writes books which I really enjoy. I jumped at the chance to join this book tour and hoped this book would live up to my expectations again. Let’s just say this may be her best book up to now.
This story is told from the past and present by Tom, who tells why he had to do what he did and Rachel, his wife, who had to endure the affair he had that saw him leave her and their children. Then his disappearance as well, leaving her to support the children.
Seven years later she receives a note that appears to be from him. Just as she is able to claim that he is legally dead, everything starts to unravel. Tom’s girlfriend Heidi appears and begins to play a part in Rachel’s children’s life as well. As notes keep showing up on her doorstep, Rachel begins to wonder if Tom is really dead and what are Heidi’s motivations?
An intriguing storyline that makes for 0compulsive and twisty read. Full of secrets and plenty of deception to, creating an engaging and addictive read. I have read a number of books lately that fulfill that criteria and The Widow’s Husband was as entertaining, well written and as good a read as the others.
I thoroughly enjoyed the unreliability of the characters. They made me so unsure what was going to happen, as I was reading. I suspected almost everyone of something all the way through, nit that I was right with everything…as I discovered in the end.
A very well written book and one I do not hesitate to recommend if you love psychological thrillers.
