Fenella J. Miller – New Recruits at Goodwill House @rararesources @fenellamiller @BoldwoodBooks #NewRecruitsatGoodwillHouse #BoldwoodBooks

I am so happy to be bringing Fenella J. Miller’s New Recruits at Goodwill House to the blog today. Thanks yo Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the copy of the book to join the tour today.

May 1940

There are new residents at Goodwill House – WAAF drivers Camilla ‘Millie’ Cunningham and Diane Forsyth, both eager to do their bit for the war effort and excited to be helping the brave boys who fly.

And when Millie meets dashing and heroic Spitfire pilot Ted Thorrington, they strike up an instant connection. But with Hitler gaining more ground in Europe, there is danger brewing across the Channel in Dunkirk and Ted is required to fly more and more dangerous sorties, risking his life every time.

With their hearts and lives on the line, the courage of the girls in blue will be tested like never before…

New Recruits at Goodwill House is a historical fiction novel and the second in the Goodwill House series. It can be read as a standalone but, if you have read the first book you will recognise a few characters.

This book continues from where the first book ended. Lady Joanna Harcourt is waiting on six WAAF girls to arrive at Goodwill House. Her husband is in France and Sarah, her daughter has moved out. She is left living with her dog and her mother in law, the Dowager Lady Harcourt, not the nicest woman in the world, and the staff of the house.

The first arrivals are Camilla’Millie’ Cunningham and Diane ‘Di’ Forsyth, both drivers fresh from training in the WAAF. Then there are Cora and Ruby, both drivers as well. Pamela and Phyllis are the older WAAFs who are taking up residence alongside the other four. These new characters bring new storylines to the series, which include some romance too.

I always enjoy a historical fiction series, as I am a bit of a history geek. The first book in the series took me straight out of my everyday life and transported me back to the 1940s. I hoped this book would do the same. Fenella J. Miller has created another book that captures the time period perfectly. Her characters are again superbly created, realistic enough to make me feel like I was with friends as I read.

A worthy follow on from the first book that is as well written as The War Girls of Goodwill House. Again highly recommended for any historical fiction fan who enjoys well researched and atmospheric novel.
