Today, it’s my turn to host Love In A Time Of War by Adrienne Chinn for Rachel’s Random Resources. Thanks to both Rachel and One More Chapter for my copy of the book.

Three sisters
The Great War
The end of innocence…

In 1913, in a quiet corner of London, the three Fry sisters are coming of age, dreaming of all the possibilities the bright future offers. But when war erupts their innocence is shattered and a new era of uncertainty begins.

Cecelia loves Max but his soldier’s uniform is German, not British, and suddenly the one man she loves is the one man she can’t have.

Jessie enlists in the army as a nurse and finally finds the adventure she’s craved when she’s sent to Gallipoli and Egypt, but it comes with an unimaginable cost.

Etta elopes to Capri with her Italian love, Carlo, but though her growing bump is real, her marriage certificate is a lie.

As the three sisters embark on journeys they never could have imagined, their mother Christina worries about the harsh new realities they face, and what their exposure to the wider world means for the secrets she’s been keeping…

The first book in a trilogy revolving around the Fry sisters – Cecilia (Celie) and non-identical twins, Jessica (Jessie) and Etta – and their mother, Christina. We are witness to the very different paths they chose after World War One begins.

We also have a dual timeline with Christina told from 1891 on the beautiful island of Capri. Jessica works as a nurse, jumping at the chance to work abroad in both Gallipoli and Egypt. Celie falls in love with a German, Max, a man who is now her enemy! And Etta elopes to Italy, but under false pretences.

A historical fiction novel that is set in a time where opportunities for women’s freedom along with lots of tragedy and heartbreak too. We see the war from English, German, and one Italian soldier, which is really interesting as Italy’s position changed over the war.

I have read Adrienne Chinn’s work before and found her writing to be fantastic. Her characters were really well created, and this book is no different. Every one of the girls was unique in their personality, and I found that I warmed to them as they found their own ways in life. I have to admit my heart went out to Celie with her German boyfriend, and I did wonder how her life would play out if they married.

Love In A Time Of War by Adrienne Chinn is a story that is rich in detail with characters you take to your heart and one that transports you to a time long gone.
