Nicola Pryce – The Cornish Captive |@rararesources| @NPryce_author| #booktour #bookreview #rararesources

Today, I’m on the tour for The Cornish Captive by Nicola Pryce for Rachel’s Random Resources. Thanks to both Rachel and Nicola Pryce for my place on this tour and my copy of the book to take part.

The sixth novel in a stunning series set in eighteenth-century Cornwall, perfect for fans of Bridgerton

Cornwall, 1800.

Imprisoned on false pretences, Madeleine Pelligrew, former mistress of Pendenning Hall, has spent the last 14 years shuttled between increasingly destitute and decrepit mad houses. When a strange man appears out of the blue to release her, she can’t quite believe that her freedom comes without a price. Hiding her identity, Madeleine determines to discover the truth about what happened all those years ago.

Unsure who to trust and alone in the world, Madeleine strikes a tentative friendship with a French prisoner on parole, Captain Pierre de la Croix. But as she learns more about the reasons behind her imprisonment, and about those who schemed to hide her away for so long, she starts to wonder if Pierre is in fact the man he says he is. As Madeleine’s past collides with her present, can she find the strength to follow her heart, no matter the personal cost?

This is the sixth book in a series, and the first time I have read any of the series. It is a book that can be read as a standalone easily. As a reader, I prefer to get into a series and get under the characters’ skin so I can understand their motivations, etc. Without that option, I still enjoyed the book and the characters, too.

Nicola Pryce’s characters are spot on. Madeleine lost everything, including her identity. She escapes after fourteen years and is determined to discover who ordered her imprisonment. Once free, she  finds out that England and France are at war, her marital country with her birth country. Everything about her made me care. I wanted to hug her so much.

A historical fiction novel always pulls me in. Being a history nerd, I just love to be entertained and educated at the same time. The war between England and France in this period I don’t know much about, and we see Madeleine being drawn into a world of spies and secret agents. It is a tangled web of deception, subterfuge, lies, and secrets.

The Cornish setting is a character on its own, so rugged and atmospheric, a place I could picture in my mind with the vivid descriptions. The mystery of why Madeleine was held captive adds mystery to the story, along with romance, the secrets, and lies. An engrossing book that took me back to 1800 with a story that was cleverly woven with twists that add even more.

A saga that I have arrived late too, but I now have five books to add to my eventual to be read list. If you love a gorgeous setting with a rich historical, romantic, story page laced with mystery and danger, I recommend this book.
