Evie Hunter – The Trap

Today I am excited that it is my turn on the Boldwood Blog Tour for The Trap by Evie Hunter on behalf of Rachel’s Random Resources. Thanks to both Rachel and Boldwood for my gifted copy of the book.

Callie Devereux has it all – a successful career, a beautiful home and an attentive, loving partner. Until one day, she wakes up to discover that the man she thought she loved has taken everything from her, leaving her penniless. Desperate to get answers, Callie goes after the man she once trusted and discovers a world built on secrets and lies…

Jack Carlisle has never heard of the man Callie Devereaux claims to have once loved, but he has a good idea who it is – his business partner and old friend, Logan Armitage. Jack can’t believe Logan would steal, but as he helps Callie to find his old friend, Jack discovers money missing too…

But with Logan missing without trace, there is only option left to catch this thief – to set a trap.

This is a revenge thriller that grabs you from the start. I wasn’t able to put it down at all. We meet Callie, successful with everything she ever wanted, including a partner that’s everything she needs… until the day she discovers she is penniless and her perfect partner has disappeared. We see her deciding to play her con man of an ex at his own game and regain what he has absconded with.

I was in Callie’s World immediately. Evie Hunter has written a great plot with characters that you can get behind. Although I always love helping the underdog, and with Callie being blindsided, I was there. The pace was quite a slow burn but it was enough to keep me interested and not feel like information was flashing by as I read.

I thoroughly appreciated the pace of the book as it began to race to the conclusion. I do think some readers won’t be struck on it, but I thought it fitted the storyline and how it naturally came to the ending.

Narrated in the third person focusing mainly on Callie, switching to Jack and Logan throughout gives the reader the chance to become familiar with all the characters and have the full picture as events unfurled.

Boldwood likens this book to Gemma Rogers’ work, another Boldwood author, and yes, I love her books as well. Evie Hunter is one to pick up if you enjoy Gemma Rogers and Nina Manning books.
